A Journey of Honour & Hope
A Journey of Honour & Hope
Story
Hello and welcome,
Thank you for taking the time to read my story - a journey to 'honour' those that have sadly lost their battle and to give 'hope' to those that are still fighting the disease. For me, it's one that’s deeply personal and driven by hope, resilience and the mission of the Mark Hughes Foundation.
Why This Trek?
The Everest Base Camp Trek is more than a physical challenge; it’s a test of endurance, mental strength and determination —it’s a powerful personal experience. The Everest Base Camp trek is one of exploration, bonding, and individual achievement. It shows that 'impossible' can become 'I’m possible'. It’s not merely standing at the foot of the world’s tallest mountain, but all that I’ll experience on the journey. This trip will not only challenge me, but also encourage and transform — leaving me with lifelong memories.
My Inspiration:
In December 2005, my mum received a life altering diagnosis of stage 4 Glioblastoma Multiforme (GBM). She was given a 9-14 month prognosis & underwent brain surgery, radiation and intense chemotherapy. We made the most of the good days and tried to hide our tears on the bad days. Sadly after a 10 month battle and just 5 days shy of her 68th birthday, mum grew her ‘Angel Wings’.
Fast forward 17 years, and on July 26, 2023, my then 27 year old nephew Jake was airlifted from Broken Hill Hospital to the RAH with the RFDS after scans showed a 7cm brain tumour. A rare Atypical Teratoid Rhabdoid Tumour (ATRT). Jake underwent intense radiation, endless rounds of chemotherapy and 2 lots of surgeries to remove the tumours. He was a much loved son, brother, nephew, grandson and friend to so many. On February 28, 2026, just 3 days shy of his 30th birthday, the hard fought battle he'd endured for some 947 days, came to an end and Jake grew his 'Angel Wings'. He will be #forever29.
'To the world they are just one, but to us they are the world'
By honouring their memory and the MHF’s mission to improve outcomes for those affected by brain cancer, we can make a meaningful impact in the fight against brain cancer. 'Together we CAN find a cure and beat brain cancer'.
I thank you in advance for your ongoing support!
